SOHO Comet Discoverers' Totals

Last updated: July 24, 2008

Current totals: 1515

This table lists of total number of SOHO comets, including SWAN discoveries. Note that only the comets, confirmed by MPC and reported on MPECs or IAUCs, those internally confirmed by SOHO personnel and granted a "SOHO number" when still awaiting permanent designation as well. Refer to Sungrazer Web site for reports and astrometry. Please notify me about the errors and your disagreements.

Wow -- what a busy start to July! Some nice comets in there too,
especially the non-group objects. Great finds!
Many congratulations to Bo Zhou for being the sixth comet hunter to
reach 100 comets!! Well done!
--
As some of you may have seen on the "comets-ml" Yahoo! group, I am
going to be supporting Alan Hale in his quest to observe visually a
sungrazing comet during the August 1st eclipse. I would just like
to mirror his request for you all to be extra vigilant in your SOHO
comet-hunting in the couple of days leading up to the eclipse. If
any of you will be in a position to observe the eclipse, I encourage
you to be on the watch for sungrazers! (Warning: pointing telescopes
at or near the Sun, eclipse or not, is extremely dangerous!! Please
be careful!)

As always, feel free to email me your questions, comments,

Well done to Michal for finding so many comets recently, but the
big congratulations are reserved for Rob and SOHO-1500!! Fantastic
stuff! Thanks to everyone, too, for all your efforts. I hope you
all stick around for another 500 comets! :)

All,

We appear to be having intermittent web server problems. Please be
prepared to email me your reports (and, optionally, post them to the
SohoHunter group).
Also, since I'm posting, I'll give you a handful more confirmations
too:

I have actually got all confirmations finished up to the most recent
report... but I have decided it's more fun if I keep them secret for
now! :) You will get to see them all once we've found SOHO-1500
(which, at current rates, could be by the end of next week!). The
only thing I will say is that, in addition to the above x-comet (we
had a LASCO problem that day so data is lost), I can not confirm the
Meyer comet reported by Rainer at Jun 09 2008 08:30:45. It was just
well-placed noise.

A predictably busy month. Many congratulations to Giuseppe for
finding his first two SOHO comets!! Also, well done to Jiangao and
Michal for finding a total of 12 comets between them this month!
--
So clearly we are heading towards another big milestone -- 1500! (I
can't believe we are here already!). As is my policy for events
such as this, once we reach #1490 I will suspend recording "archive"
comet discoveries until after 1500. So if you have any archive
claims you plan to submit, do it now or wait until after 1500. My
definition of "archive" data is a bit fuzzy, but basically any
images that have been readily available for more than ~24hrs could
be considered archive. Email me if you want more clarification.

First, I disagree with C3 positions given for SOHO-1454. I just
can't get them to work at all (and I can't see anything there!).
--
Second, Jingao and Michal's comet from Apr23 will have to be an
x-comet, as the next few hours of SOHO data came from EIT only.
Also, while looking at that object I saw what looks to me like a
leading component, though I'm not certain on it since we only have
two images. My positions are as follows:
XC65 C2 Kreutz Apr23,08, (0,0) lower-left
4/23/08 14:35 261,40
14:55 270,54
I'm confident enough to give it XC status but I would have liked
at least one more image as it isn't a "typical" looking Kreutz
--
Finally, many congratulations to Eryk Banach on finding his first
SOHO comet! Also, at 14yrs old, I think he is one of the youngest
SOHO comet discoverers. Well done, Eryk!

I should also mention the following comets:

SECCHI-002 (C/2008 D2) A.Watson HI1-A
SECCHI-003 (C/2008 D3) A.Watson HI1-A,COR2-A,COR2-B
SECCHI-004 (C/2008 D4) R.Kracht HI1-A
Alan also has another couple of reports pending that I need to check
over. Many congratulations to Alan and Rainer!!
It is my intention to merge the SECCHI and SOHO comet programs -- by
which I mean start including SECCHI comet information on the
sungrazer website. That will happen later next month. In the
meantime, I am going to begin measuring the SOHO-discovered comets
seen by SECCHI instruments. Hopefully the multiple viewpoints will
give us some fantastic orbit determinations, such as that for 2008 D3!

That's the only one I can confirm in the recent lot. I was not at all
convinced by Tony's Jan 8th claim. Too slow, too inconsistent in
shape and brightness, and I couldn't see it in two of the positions. I
also could not see anything in C3 reports made by Rob and Bo around the
same time.
--
You may have noticed that I am running quickly through the backlog of
astrometry measures. For now I am going to stop at SOHO-1423 until we
have a better data product available. I would have liked to have
measured 1429 (above) but we have a big data gap on the 15th. We will
recover that data in the LZ data product, but that will not be processed
for another two or three weeks.

First, congratulations to Parrish for finding his first SOHO comet!
At the other end of the scale... enormous congratulations to Rainer
Kracht for becoming the first person to find 200 SOHO comets!! It is
an extraordinary achievement, and a well-deserved one for the many
hours Rainer has dedicated to SOHO comet hunting. (It's just a shame
it was a Marsden-group object and not a Kracht-group one -- that
would have been very poetic!) :)
--
I'm not sure what to make of Arkadiusz's object. I think it is a
Kreutz (group II), but it's certainly well off the usual path. Also,
Rainer's most recent Meyer object seemed to have a lower inclination
than the nominal track, but I could be wrong.

Once again, I hope you all have a wonderful New Year, with plenty of
SOHO comet discoveries!

More congratulations, this time to Tony Hoffman for breaking the
100-comet mark! Fantastic work, Tony -- well done!
Also, Rainer is now just one comet away from his 200th! Wow!!!

Well done to Michal for finding his second comet, to Masanori for
finding that Non-group comet, and to Hua for just finding so many
comets!! :)

Congratulations here are due to Zhangwei and Michal for finding
their first SOHO comets -- well done!! :)
Also, congratulations to Bo for finding SOHO's 1400th comet!!
--
Way back on Jan20,2004 (12:46:38) I confirmed SOHO-700 and made the
comment "let's hope for 700 more". I'm not really sure if I actually
believed we could reach SOHO-1400, but I should have had faith in
the remarkable SOHO satellite and the extraordinary dedication of
all of you SOHO comet hunters! So it is with far less hesitation
that I now say "LET'S HOPE FOR ANOTHER 700 MORE"!!!! :) Thank you
everyone for your continued contributions to this project -- every
new comet you find is making history!

Bo's C2 Kreutz claim was too inconsistent in shape/brightness and was not
visible in as many images as I would like. Therefore it is an x-comet.
There were one or two 'confirmed' reports that I could not confirm. If you have
any specific questions about your reports, please feel free to email me.
--
You may have noticed that in the past two weeks, I have gotten the
"official" comet measurements sent off and so -- thanks to the hard work and
patience of Brian Marsden -- we're now pretty much up-to-date. I'm going to be
tied up with something else for the next couple of weeks, but I think we are
in good shape right now. Please continue to keep the noise down to an absolute
minimum -- it's been very good lately, so thank you!

And, of course, we also have
SOHO-85=661 Sep10,07 18:10:41 B.Zhou C2,C3 KrachtII Sep10-12,07 !!
--
Note that Bo's object from Aug29 has to go as an x-comet. The positions
do not line up with Hua's C2 Kreutz. In addition, it is not visible in
HI-1B (which it definitely should be) or COR2 (which is likely for an
object as bright as that should have been). So it can be an x-comet for
now.
--
Going back to P/2007 R5... I have two choices regarding SOHO numbers. I
can either vacate the SOHO-661 spot for the next archvie Kreutz to be
reported, or I can just stick with SOHO-85=661 and leave it at that.
(Note that I am NOT willing to reduce the SOHO comet number of comets
662 through 1359!). I think I will probably vacate 661 and give discovery
credit on the web page to Terry, Kazimieras and Bo. That sound OK to
everyone?

Many congratulations to Bo Zhou for flying past the 50-comets mark!
Unfortuntately I was unable to confirm several other claims he made,
mostly because the objects were at the level of background noise.
This included the Kracht-group comets he reported.

Well March proved to be a very quiet month (which was good for me

since I'm so busy!). I think I have checked all the reports but let

me know if I missed any. It should be noted that most, if not all,

of the above comets were observed in the SECCHI HI-1A instrument --

even Tony's C2-only Kreutz!! Many, many thanks are due to Alan Watson

and Rainer Kracht for monitoring that data. In due course I will

begin the process of measuring the comets in those images

Wow!! In February 2006 we had a total of 11 comets for the whole

month... This Feb., we have had 10 in the first nine days! Amazing!

Congratulations to all who found comets, especially Masanori who

found his first SOHO comet after only three days as a "registered"

comet hunter -- that has to be a record! Well done, Masanori!

--

I was hoping Hua's non-group comet would survive a little longer

than it did. Oh well...

As you can see, Rainer's unusual comet got promoted from X-comet

once I stopped treating it as a Kreutz. I think it must be a non-

group object -- it just doesn't move like a Kreutz in my opinion.

--

There seems to be a resurgence of non-group comet claims. Please

think carefully before you post these. We see very, very few non-

group comets, especially in C3. Otherwise the report form is

looking quite junk-free, so that's nice -- thank you!

Several things to say... First, sorry Rainer but that little Kreutz

of yours just wasn't right somehow. I couldn't get a fifth position

and I just didn't feel 100% confident of it so it is an X-Comet.

Second, the C3 positions given for Rainer's Meyer-group comet did

not work at all, so that is a C2-only object.

Third, I will be on vacation until January 8th. Please try and keep

the number of posts down to a sensible figure. I realise that we have

just had a big "comet storm" but we are now heading into January, so

the C2 stream will dry up completely and the C3 stream should tail

off somewhat too -- so I expect the volume of reports to decrease

accordingly!

As always, email me if you have any questions, problems, etc and I

will answer you when I can.

I hope everyone has a Happy New Year! :)

It looks like the three-position minimum for C3 is working out nicely.

The reports page is much more readable than usual (admittedly the lack

of images has helped somewhat, too...).

Congratulations to Rainer on finding a very tiny archive Kreutz.

--

The website is a little out-of-date in terms of MPEC links, etc, so I

am going to fix that now. (More MPECs were released today, btw)
